01

Build a moisture map before cleaning

Ask where water first appeared, whether it follows rain or air-conditioning use, and whether the car was recently valeted. Lift only accessible mats and luggage-floor panels with permission. Look at carpet edges, seat rails, headliner corners, door apertures and the spare-wheel well. Photograph tide marks, corrosion and staining before drying. Smell alone is weak evidence because detailing products can hide odours and damp fabric can have several causes. Mark each finding on a simple cabin sketch so the workshop can test the likely route instead of applying sealant broadly.

02

Test roof equipment without forcing it

If a sunroof is fitted, check glass position, surrounding seals, shade travel and normal opening and closing. Listen for strained operation and inspect accessible channels for debris. Ask a technician to verify drainage using the model-specific procedure. Do not push wire into drain tubes or blast compressed air through them; damage or disconnection can turn a small blockage into an interior leak. A seal is not necessarily designed to keep every drop outside the drainage tray. The important question is whether the complete water-management system routes water away correctly.

03

Investigate glass and door repair history

Compare windscreen markings, invoice dates, trim fit and bonding evidence with the service timeline. After glass replacement, wind noise and water entry may share a sealing cause while camera calibration is a separate obligation. Use the CX-5 safety and ADAS checks if the screen supports a forward camera. Inspect door membranes, weatherstrips and rear lamp areas where the moisture map points. Do not call uneven trim accident proof on its own; connect it to paint, fasteners and documented work before drawing a conclusion.

04

Keep local ingress separate from flood assessment

A local leak may affect one footwell while broader immersion can reach wiring, restraints and concealed cavities. If corrosion, sediment or staining occurs across unrelated low points, stop treating the issue as a roof repair. Continue with the CX-5 flood and structural inspection. Diagnostics and accessible connector examination may be needed even when the cabin has dried. A seller promise to replace carpet does not answer whether affected modules, harness joints or restraint components have been inspected and remain serviceable.

05

Specify repair and controlled retesting

Ask the repairer to identify the entry point, repair method and affected interior materials. Repeat a controlled water test under safe workshop conditions, then inspect the original wet area and neighbouring cavities. A brief hose spray immediately after surface sealing is not enough if water takes time to migrate. Check after standing and after a road test where appropriate. Confirm that drainage remains open and trim is restored. Keep photographs before and after work, because a newly dry carpet cannot demonstrate what happened beneath it during the original leak.

06

Decide whether the discount covers the uncertainty

A documented door-seal repair with a dry retest is different from unexplained cabin-wide corrosion. Price drying, trim removal, electrical diagnosis and repeat testing separately from the visible seal. For export, the vehicle may sit through rain and temperature changes before arrival, making unresolved moisture more consequential. Agree who checks the cabin immediately before loading and after unloading. Reject a candidate when concealed damage cannot be assessed or the seller refuses reasonable access. A higher-priced dry vehicle can be cheaper than an open-ended interior and electrical investigation overseas.

Buyer questions

Does a sunroof leak prove flood history?

No. Local drainage and sealing faults differ from immersion, but both require investigation of the affected materials and wiring.

Can fresh sealant establish a successful repair?

Not by itself. Confirm the actual entry route, correct repair method, open drainage and a repeat test of the previously wet area.

Reference and inspection scope

These are buyer inspection questions, not repair instructions. Use the actual market and year manual; the linked US-market manual does not establish China-market equipment.
