01

Start with a repeatable cabin test

Record ambient temperature, sun exposure, cabin temperature and whether the vehicle has just been driven or stored indoors. Identify manual or automatic climate control and the available rear outlets rather than borrowing equipment from another trim. Start with comparable settings and note how quickly the cabin becomes usable, not just the lowest vent reading. Keep doors and windows in consistent positions during repeat tests. If the seller cools the cabin before your arrival, ask for another session after it has returned to normal outdoor conditions. A video should show settings, elapsed time and thermometer position together.

02

Separate low airflow from weak refrigeration

Try each fan speed, outlet mode, recirculation setting and temperature zone. Weak flow at all temperatures can involve a restricted cabin filter, blower or duct problem; strong but warm flow suggests a different diagnostic path. Listen for flap clicking and compare left and right outlets after stabilisation. Check whether the windscreen clears effectively and whether rear passengers receive useful airflow. A blocked filter is inexpensive compared with dashboard removal, but neither should be diagnosed from a seller description alone. Ask the workshop to identify the failed function before pricing a compressor or evaporator.

03

Compare stationary and moving operation

Run a safe, supervised test at idle and on a normal road route. A system that cools while moving but struggles when stationary deserves checks of condenser airflow, fan operation and heat rejection. Watch the engine temperature and warning state without assuming every cabin complaint comes from the air conditioner. Stop for overheating or abnormal mechanical noise. Never open a hot cooling system. For an engine-specific concern, start with the CX-5 ownership and mechanical risk guide before accepting a recharge as the complete remedy.

04

Look for the reason behind a recent recharge

Request the date, refrigerant specification, leak-test findings and invoice when the seller says the system was serviced. A recent top-up without a cause does not establish durable repair. Inspect accessible pipe joints, condenser damage, compressor area and drain discharge without dismantling or releasing refrigerant. Moisture in the footwell can come from drainage or body sealing, so use the CX-5 water-leak checks where the source is unclear. Refrigerant quantity and oil must follow the exact system label; generic service figures are not safe substitutes.

05

Price the fault around local workshop capability

Ask a destination workshop whether it supports the fitted refrigerant, compressor control and climate diagnostics. Compare a confirmed repair estimate with a diagnostic allowance if the cause remains unknown. Include labour access, seals, drying or cleaning where justified and a repeat heat-soak test. Dashboard-intensive work may cost more than the visible part. Add only the evidence-backed items to the CX-5 maintenance budget. If the purchase requires strong cooling for children or long idling queues, an untested system is a meaningful purchase condition rather than a minor comfort exception.

06

Choose between two imperfect candidates

Suppose one CX-5 has documented condenser replacement and repeatable cooling, while a cheaper car has cold vents immediately after an unexplained recharge. The first may be the lower-risk purchase even if both look equally good. Compare sustained performance, leak evidence and service access instead of rewarding the lowest single reading. Require the accepted work to be completed before the final test, with no external fan or charger masking normal conditions. Photograph the final settings and retain the invoice so the receiver can repeat the same assessment after shipping.

Evidence checklist

  • Outdoor starting temperature and elapsed cooling time
  • Fan speeds, outlet modes and both temperature zones
  • Idle versus moving performance
  • Leak diagnosis and exact refrigerant label
  • Repair invoice and repeat heat-soak result

Buyer questions

Is there one correct vent temperature for every CX-5?

No. Ambient conditions, humidity, control settings and system design affect the reading. Judge the result using an appropriate procedure for the specific vehicle.

Should I accept a recharge before inspection?

Only with the original symptoms and service evidence preserved. A recharge can temporarily conceal a leak; ask what was found and how the repair was verified.

Reference and inspection scope

These are buyer inspection questions, not repair instructions. Use the actual market and year manual; the linked US-market manual does not establish China-market equipment.

CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY

Verify the exact vehicle

Specifications vary by year and market. Match the VIN, vehicle documents, inspection findings and manufacturer service information before purchase.
