Agree the inspection brief before filming
List the decisions the video must support: vehicle identity, body condition, cold operation, cabin functions and road behaviour. Ask for the VIN, odometer and date to be shown at the start, then keep filenames tied to that candidate. Avoid exposing private ownership documents or key security codes in public links. Use the CX-5 inspection checklist to define coverage, but ask the inspector to state where access is restricted. A seller should not answer an unavailable underbody view by sending footage of a similar car.
Make cold-start evidence genuinely cold
Ask when the engine last ran, how long it rested and what the ambient conditions were. An independent inspector can compare relevant temperatures and observe the vehicle before starting. Record the dashboard sequence, initial running and exhaust area safely without standing in a hazardous position. Keep the clip continuous through the first moments rather than cutting away from a warning or noise. A warm engine does not establish cold-start quality. If the car was moved before inspection, label the limitation and arrange a later test rather than pretending the requirement was met.
Use still images for details video misses
Request sharp photographs of labels, tyre sidewalls, paint readings, glass marks and repair areas. Video compression can hide small cracks, corrosion or diagnostic text. Ask the inspector to distinguish what was measured from what was visually observed. Neither a phone camera nor a single paint reading can establish the complete history of a vehicle.
Document road behaviour without unsafe filming
Use a qualified driver and a separate observer or safely mounted camera. Record route type, speed range, temperature and traffic limitations. Do not ask the driver to hold a phone, provoke emergency braking or exceed local road rules. Capture cold and warm selection, ordinary acceleration, braking and steering observations where safe. For an automatic concern, use the transmission road-test procedure. Cabin microphones alter sound, so a recording should support the inspector report rather than serve as a definitive diagnosis of bearings, internal wear or exhaust noise.
Keep diagnostics and independence visible
Request the original scan report with VIN, date, mileage and module coverage before clearing faults. A photograph of one green scanner screen is not the same thing. Ask who employed the inspector, what relationship they have with the seller and which tests were excluded. Independence does not guarantee perfection, but it changes how commercial pressure is managed. If a finding needs dismantling or specialist equipment, price the additional inspection explicitly. A remote buyer should be able to distinguish a seller demonstration, an inspector observation and a workshop diagnosis in the final file.
Turn gaps into a decision rather than more footage
After reviewing the evidence, create a short exception list with the missing test and its purchase consequence. For example, no lift access leaves underbody condition unresolved; no cold start leaves a specific operating condition untested. Ask for the targeted follow-up instead of another general walkaround. Compare the car only after important gaps are closed, or reject it when the uncertainty exceeds the available budget and support. Preserve the original files and final inspection report before payment. Videos help communicate evidence; they do not replace legal ownership, destination eligibility or the written sales agreement.
